미시간 주 새기노 출생. 노스웨스턴 대학을 졸업하였고, <Sweet of Success>로 토니어워즈 남우 주연상에 노미네이트 되었다. 그는 연극 <The Good Thief>로 오비에어워드를 수상하였다.
그는 프레드릭 베랏의 브로드웨이 뮤지컬 <Titanic>에 출연하였고, <Carousel>과 <Blood Brothers>에 출연하였다. 오프 브로드웨이에서는 앤드류 리파의 뮤지컬 <The Wild Party, 2000>에 출연하여 드라마데스크 어워드에 노미네이트 되었다. <Floyd Collins>와 거쉬인의 <Pardon My English>, <The Lieutenant of Inishmore>, <Dirty Rotten Scoundrels>, <The Apple Tree>에 출연하였다.
2004년 브라이언은 크리스마스 앨범 타이틀 ‘From Christmas Eve to Christmas Morn”을 발표하였고, 새로운 뮤지컬 <Next to Normal>에 출연하였다. 그는 빙 크로스비가 주연한 <White Christmas> 공연에 출연하였다. 또한, <Shrek the Musical> 에서 타이틀인 슈렉을 맡아 공연하였다. 그는 이 작품으로 드라마데스크어워즈 남우주연상을 수상하였고, 토니어워즈 남우주연상에 노미네이트 되었다.
