작사가이자 싱어송 라이터이기도 하다. 그는 버트 바카락과 파트너로 작업을 했다.
데이빗은 1940년대부터 자신이 속한 밴드에서부터 가사를 쎴다. 1957년 데이빗은 버트 바카락을 뉴욕에서 만나게 되고 팀을 이루어 함께 작업하기 시작하였다. 그들의 첫 노래는 1957년 마티 로빈스가 부른 “The Story of My Life”였다. 후에 페티 코모의 “Magic Moments”의 가사도 썼으며 이 노래가 히트시키면서 그들의 입지가 굳어졌다. 그들은 더시튼 스프링필드, B.J. 토마스, 젠 핀터, 톰 존스, 잭키 드샤논 등의 가수들에게 곡을 만들어 주어 대히트를 시켰다. 그의 대표작으로 "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head", "This Guy's in Love with You", "I'll Never Fall in Love Again", "Do You Know the Way to San Jose", "Walk on By", "What the World Needs Now Is Love", "I Say a Little Prayer", "(There's) Always Something There to Remind Me", "One Less Bell to Answer", "Anyone Who Had a Heart"등이 있다.
"Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head"은 영화 <Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid>에 주제곡으로 아카데미 어워드에서 음악상을 수상하였으며, 그래미어워드를 수 차례 수상하였고, 빌보드 차트에 올랐던 히트곡이 40여 곡에 다다른다.
