그는 드라마틱 아트 로얄 아카데미에서 훈련받았았다.
TV 드라마 <London’s Burning>에 출연하였으며 <The Bill>에 출연하였다. 1993년 그는 손드하임의 작품 <Assassins> 웨스트엔드 공연에 출연하여 올리비에 어워드 남우주연상을 수상하였다. 2000년에는 <The Merchant of Venice>에 출연하였다.
뮤지컬 <Of Thee I Sing, 1996>, <Chicago, 1997>에서 빌리 플린, <Follies, 2002>에서는 버디 역을 맡았다. 2001년에는 <The Producers>에서는 나산 레인 역의 언더스터디를 하였다.
그는 2007년 리바이벌 뮤지컬 <Fiddler on the Roof>에서 테비에 역을 맡았으며, 2008년에는 라디오 시리즈 <The Way We Live Right Now>에 참여하였고, 2009년 런던 리바이벌 공연인 <Duet for One>에 출연하였다.
2009년 영화 <The Damned United>에 출연하였고, 2010년에는 <Yes, Prime Minister>에 출연 예정이다.
