미국 여배우, 가수, 댄서
플로리다주, 성 어거스틴 출생. 어렸을 때부터 노래와 춤을 추었고, 무대에 섰었다. 그녀는 뮤지컬 <Damn Yankees>로 데뷔하였다. 뮤지컬 <Chicago>에 출연도 하였다.
필라델피아 예술대학을 졸업한 그녀는 탭댄서 앙상블로 처음 선 뮤지컬 무대는 아틀란틱시에있는트로피카나 호텔에서 올려진 <Uptown it’s Hot>이었다. 이 작품은 브로드웨이로 옮겨져 공연되면서 그녀가 프로로 일하는 첫 번째 무대가 되었다.
1987년 <Dreamgirls>, <Company, 1995>, <Ragtime, 1998>, <Funny Girl, 2002>등의 무대에 섰으며, 2005년에는 뮤지컬 <The Color Purple>의 타이틀 롤을 맡아 공연하였다. 2009년에는 <The Wiz>의 무대에 섰다.
이 외에도 TV와 영화에도 출연하였다. <Sex and the City, 1999>, <The Corsby Mysteries, 1994>, <Leap of Faith, 1992> 등에 출연하였다.
2006년 토니어워즈에서 <The Color Purple>로 여우주연상을 수상하였다.
